Marseille grab last-gasp equalizer against Nantes

Olympique Marseille snatched an equaliser five minutes into stoppage-time to draw 1-1 at home to Nantes in Ligue 1 on Sunday and avoid a fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions.

Florian Thauvin bundled the ball into the net in a goalmouth melee following a corner after Nantes had taken the lead early in the first half through Leo Dubois, who beat Steve Mandanda with a right-foot shot from Valentin Rongier’s cut-back.

Nantes defender Nicolas Pallois was sent off after a second booking for dissent immediately after the equaliser for protesting that he had been fouled by Marseille’s Luis Gustavo. Latest odds on NaijaBet

Marseille, who enjoyed more possession but squandered a string of chances, notably three by France international Dimitri Payet, remained third in the standings on 56 points from 28 matches.

They are four points behind second-placed Monaco and 18 adrift of leaders Paris St Germain, who won 2-0 at Troyes on Saturday. Continue reading “Marseille grab last-gasp equalizer against Nantes”

Mourinho happy with Rashford recent progress

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says Marcus Rashford is getting the experience he needs to progress and the fact that he has not started a league game since December should not affect his chances of being picked for England’s World Cup squad.

In only two years since bursting onto the scene at Old Trafford, Rashford has gone on to win 15 caps and become an integral part of the England squad under Gareth Southgate.

The 20-year-old striker has not started for United in the Premier League since late December and British media reported that the situation is causing Southgate concern as he prepares to name his squad for friendlies against Netherlands and Italy. Place bet on today’s game on NaijaBet

“You know, if the national coach trusts him, he selects him,” Mourinho told reporters ahead of United’s league trip to Crystal Palace on Monday.

“You have the example of (Sergio) Romero, who is the second goalkeeper at Manchester United and the first goalkeeper for such an amazing football country like Argentina. Continue reading “Mourinho happy with Rashford recent progress”

Milan hope to sink Inter in “Derby della Madonnina” this weekend

In the midst of a superb run of results, AC Milan face stuttering city rivals Inter in the “Derby della Madonnina” this weekend looking to haul themselves right into Champions League contention in Serie A.

Sunday’s game will be the moment of truth for Inter coach Luciano Spalletti, as amid claims of dressing room quarrels the club have still not fully emerged from the crisis of recent weeks, despite last week’s win against bottom club Benevento.

They occupy fourth position — the final Champions League spot — but Roma are just one point behind before they go to leaders Napoli. Milan are seven points behind in seventh. Forecast your weekend games Now on NaijaBet

Steven Zhang — son of owner Zhang Jindong — joined the Inter team at their snow-covered Appiano Gentile training centre this week, underlining the significance of the clash as they struggle for form.

“This weekend is the moment of truth,” said Inter centre-back Milan Skriniar of a game which will be followed by a home clash with Napoli.

“Certainly my stay at Inter isn’t linked to whether we qualify for the Champions League, although I’m convinced we’ll get there,” added the Slovak, who joined from Sampdoria last summer. Continue reading “Milan hope to sink Inter in “Derby della Madonnina” this weekend”

England will never win the World Cup – Eriksson

The former Three Lions boss believes global glory will remain elusive for as long as the Premier League refuses to introduce a winter break

England have been warned by Sven-Goran Eriksson that they will never win the World Cup for as long as the Premier League refuses to introduce a winter break.

The Three Lions will go in search of global glory once again this summer, with Gareth Southgate the latest man to be charged with the task of delivering on expectation. Naija and Bet

There is slightly less pressure on the current boss than Eriksson faced during his spell at the helm, with the Swede having worked with the so-called ‘Golden Generation’ between 2001 and 2006.

He suffered two quarter-final defeats on a World Cup stage and fears England will struggle to progress much past that point while players continue to be pushed to breaking point domestically.

Eriksson said : “In 2006 I thought we should win it, I thought there wasn’t any team better than us, so that was a huge disappointment.”

Liverpool, Spurs take aim at Chelsea to finish top four

The fixture schedule has been kind on Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur this weekend with both clubs having the opportunity to put the squeeze on Chelsea in the battle to finish the season in the Premier League’s top four.

Antonio Conte’s outgoing champions look vulnerable in fifth place and by the time they kick off against runaway leaders Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday a worrying gap could have opened up immediately above them.

United are at injury-hit Crystal Palace on Monday when victory would give them 62 points.

So the pressure could be on Chelsea when they take on a City side playing their second game in four days after they face sixth-placed Arsenal in a re-arranged match on Thursday. Continue reading “Liverpool, Spurs take aim at Chelsea to finish top four”
