EPL Match Preview: Manchester City vs Newcastle United

Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw with Wolves last weekend and will look to return to winning ways when they host Newcastle. They’ve won five of their last six home meetings with Newcastle, scoring 22 goals in that run.

Newcastle have made a disappointing start to the season, picking up just one point so far, and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night.

Against a City side hellbent on returning to winning ways after a week off from competitive action, they could face a long 90 minutes at the Etihad Stadium.

Indeed, the hosts should make light work of Newcastle here. NaijaBet

Belgium forward Chadli join Monaco from West Brom

AS Monaco have brought in Belgium forward Nacer Chadli on a three-year contract from English second-tier side West Bromwich Albion for an undisclosed fee, the clubs announced on Thursday.

West Brom, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, said the deal was concluded after the Ligue 1 side made an improved offer for Chadli late on Wednesday.

British media said Monaco paid a fee of 10 million pounds ($13.01 million) for the 29-year-old attacking midfielder.

“I am very happy to join AS Monaco, a great French club that participates in the Champions League,” Chadli said. NaijaBet

EPL Match Preview: Chelsea vs Bournemouth

Chelsea have won their first three league games and beat Newcastle last weekend with 81% possession. They were turned over 3-0 the last time they played Bournemouth at home and will be out for revenge on Saturday.

Bournemouth have made an impressive start to the season, unbeaten through four matches in all competitions. They even came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Everton last weekend.

This should be an entertaining game between two sides that try and play appealing football. Chelsea haven’t had it all their own way against the Cherries in the past and should expect another tough encounter.

Chelsea- Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has no reason to make any changes from the side that beat Newcastle last weekend.

Ronaldo set to face Mourinho at Old Trafford

Cristiano Ronaldo can look forward to a return to Old Trafford in the Champions League this season after his new team Juventus came out in the same group as Manchester United in Thursday’s draw in Monaco.

Ronaldo, who was not in Monaco despite being nominated for an individual award, spent six years at United, winning the Champions League in 2008, before moving to Real Madrid in 2009.

He will come up against his compatriot Jose Mourinho, under whom he played during his time at Real, while United midfielder Paul Pogba can also look forward to facing his old team.

While those sides will be favourites to progress to the last 16 from Group H, they will have to be wary of Valencia, with the Spaniards returning to the group stage for the first time in three years.

Swiss champions Young Boys, group-stage debutants, look to be the makeweights in the section.

“It’s a manageable group, but it all depends on us. Our destiny is in our own hands,” said Juve CEO Giuseppe Marotta.

KLOPP FACES TUCHEL

Thursday’s draw ceremony at Monaco’s Grimaldi Forum, a stone’s throw from the Mediterranean Sea, threw up several other fascinating groups, with last season’s beaten finalists Liverpool set to have their work cut out alongside the Paris Saint-Germain of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, as well as Napoli, in Group C.

A meeting between Liverpool and PSG means a confrontation between two German coaches, Jurgen Klopp and his successor at Borussia Dortmund, Thomas Tuchel.

EPL Match Preview: Leicester vs Liverpool

Leicester have won three in a row since their opening day defeat to Manchester United and have kept clean sheets in two of those outings.

Liverpool have made a 100 percent start to the season after three matches and are the only side left in the Premier League yet to concede.

Leicester are in a good place at the moment but the absence of Jamie Vardy really hurts their chances of getting something on Saturday afternoon.

Liverpool are Vardy’s favourite opponents in terms of goals scored (7) and would have put their perfect defensive record to the test. Various Betting Options are available on Site

Jurgen Klopp’s side have won three of the last four meetings between the two sides, all by a one-goal margin. It should be slightly more comfortable for them here.

Venus and Serena set to meet again in US Open

Serena and Venus Williams set up a 30th career meeting on Wednesday as the US Open reeled from a sexism row sparked when a player changed her shirt on the court.

Six-time champion Serena eased into Friday’s third round encounter against her sister with a 6-2, 6-2 win over German world number 101 Carina Witthoeft on the back of 30 winners and 13 aces.

Venus, the 2000 and 2001 champion, made the third round for the 17th time with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Camila Giorgi of Italy.

Friday’s match will be the earliest the sisters have met at a Slam since the 1998 Australian Open in what was also their first ever clash. It will be their sixth face-off in New York. Naija and Bet

“Friday will be incredibly hard,” said Serena before jokingly hitting back at Venus’s claim that when they last met at a Slam in the final of the 2017 Australian Open her sister had an advantage as it was “two against one.”

That was a reference to Serena being in the early stages of pregnancy with her daughter Olympia.

“I guess I had a little advantage but it’s going to be hard for me on Friday,” said 36-year-old Serena. Continue reading “Venus and Serena set to meet again in US Open”

Ronaldo’s bicycle kick against Juve wins Uefa goal of season

Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning overhead bicycle kick for Real Madrid against current club Juventus has been voted Uefa’s goal of the season.

The former Real Madrid striker beat competition from 11 nominees for the award in honour of his goal in last season’s Champions League quarterfinal first leg in Turin.

“Thanks to everyone who voted for me. Will never forget that moment, especially the reaction of the fans in the stadium,” the 33-year-old Portuguese superstar said. Naija and Bet

Real Madrid were already leading against the Italian champions thanks to Ronaldo’s opener after just two minutes when he acrobatically blasted in Dani Carvajal’s cross on 64 minutes.

Ronaldo said it was “the best goal” of his career and it helped Real to a 3-0 win on the night and moved them a step closer to an eventual quarterfinal victory over Juve. The Spanish club went on to win the competition for the third consecutive season. Continue reading “Ronaldo’s bicycle kick against Juve wins Uefa goal of season”

Newcastle suffer early carling Cup exit, Everton move on

Newcastle’s miserable start to the season suffered another blow with a dramatic late 3-1 defeat to Championship side Nottingham Forest on Wednesday to crash out of the League Cup at the second round.

There was no such strife for Premier League high flyers Everton and Watford, who continued their unbeaten starts to the campaign with victories over Rotherham and Reading respectively to make round three.

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez had been fiercely criticised for his negative approach in defeat to Chelsea on Sunday that left the Magpies with just one point from their opening three league games. Place bet on today’s Europa League qualification matches on NaijaBet

Benitez made seven changes for the visit to the City Ground but those coming in did their case little good as Daryl Murphy headed the hosts in front inside two minutes.

That looked like being enough for Forest, until Salomon Rondon registered his first Newcastle with practically the visitors’ first decent chance two minutes into stoppage time.

However, Forest weren’t to be denied as Matty Cash and Gil Dias struck in six added minutes to reach the last 32. Continue reading “Newcastle suffer early carling Cup exit, Everton move on”

Joachim Loew makes few changes to Germany squad

Germany coach Joachim Loew admitted making several mistakes that contributed to their World Cup debacle but opted for only a handful of changes to the squad for next month’s internationals, saying a balance of experience and youth was necessary.

Loew said on Wednesday that Germany, who were condemned to their earliest World Cup exit in 80 years after being eliminated following the group stage, should never have played their possession game in a knockout tournament as teams counter-attacked successfully.

He also said he failed to instill a sense of urgency and passion among his players who lost two of their three group matches.

Among the players called up for the Nations League game against France on Sept. 6 and the friendly against Peru three days later, are returning internationals Leroy Sane, Nils Petersen and Jonathan Tah as well as newcomers Kai Havertz, who is 19, Thilo Kehrer, 21, and 25-year-old Nico Schulz. He also included Ilkay Gundogan, who was criticised for posing alongside Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan before the World Cup in a photograph which also featured Germany team-mate Mesut Ozil. The episode caused a big furore and led to Ozil’s international retirement after the World Cup.

Loew said Gundogan had suffered during the affair that overshadowed their World Cup campaign. Continue reading “Joachim Loew makes few changes to Germany squad”

Spurs defeat left united players in ‘shock’ – Pogba

Paul Pogba said Manchester United’s players were in “shock” after a 3-0 defeat to Spurs dealt a heavy blow to their Premier League title ambitions.

After a troubled build-up to the season, United have lost two of their first three matches of a campaign for the first time since 1992-93.

That season, Alex Ferguson’s men went on to clinch the title but there are few signs that under-fire manager Jose Mourinho can win United’s first league title since 2013 following Monday’s defeat at Old Trafford.

“It’s bizarre,” said Pogba. “(Against Tottenham) we were determined, we started well, and in the end we lost 3-0. It’s a shock.”

“Even we don’t understand what happened,” added the French World Cup winner. “We started the game really well, we conceded two goals in the second half.

“The first goal was a real blow, we didn’t understand why, because we had the game in hand. One goal, two… we kept pushing, we had chances, and we conceded the third. Continue reading “Spurs defeat left united players in ‘shock’ – Pogba”

US Open: Serena surges into next round as Halep crash out

Serena Williams made a triumphant return to the US Open on Monday, launching her bid for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam victory with a straight-sets win as top-seeded Simona Halep made dubious history with a first-round exit.

Williams, who counts six US Open titles among her 23 Grand Slams, can match Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 majors with another title at Flushing Meadows.

She missed last year’s edition as she gave birth to daughter Olympia on September 1, but showed every indication she’s ready to make up for lost time in a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Poland’s Magda Linette.

“I think I’m getting there,” said Williams, who turned up the heat on a steamy New York night that opened with a gala celebration of the US Open’s 50th anniversary. Latest tennis odds are available on site

“I love opening for Serena Williams,” Grammy-winning singer-song writer Kelly Clarkson told the crowd before she launched into her anthem “Stronger”.

Keylor Navas shows Courtois who is Real’s No 1

Thibaut Courtois was expected to quickly assume the role of first choice goalkeeper for Real Madrid after arriving from Chelsea for €35 million this month.

However, the Belgian World Cup semifinalist watched the European champions crush Girona 4-1 from the bench in the La Liga on Sunday at Montilivi, with Keylor Navas excelling in goal.

Every summer since 2015 Madrid has tried to sign a new goalkeeper to be their regular No 1, but Navas has doggedly held on to the position, helping the club to three consecutive Champions League titles.

The Costa Rican’s time finally appeared to be up when Courtois forced through a move to the Spanish capital from Chelsea, but thus far Julen Lopetegui has kept his faith in Navas.

He was in goal for the Uefa Super Cup game against Atletico Madrid on 15 August when Courtois was not in the squad, having only completed his move from Chelsea a few days before. Place bet on Live matches 24/7

EPL Match Preview: Newcastle United vs Chelsea

Newcastle have started the season with two straight defeats. Their performances have been good in patches but Rafa Benitez will be desperate to get some points on the board as quickly as possible.

Maurizio Sarri has won his first two Premier League games as Chelsea manager, defeating Huddersfield and Arsenal. Now he faces off against the man he replaced at Napoli in 2015, Rafa Benitez. Sarri is unbeaten in two previous meetings with Benitez, downing Napoli 4-2 with minnows Empoli in one of the matches.

Chelsea are winless in their last five matches away to Newcastle, so can expect a tough afternoon on Sunday. They have lost four of those but are in a much better place compared to their opponents heading into the weekend and will hope to change that record here.

Aubameyang battling with confidence crisis – Arsenal manager

Arsenal manager Unai Emery says misfiring striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is struggling with a lack of confidence after his barren start to the season.

Aubameyang is yet to get on the scoresheet for Arsenal this term after missing a series of chances in their defeats against Manchester City and Chelsea.

The Gabon international was especially profligate in last weekend’s 3-2 loss at Chelsea as he wasted several opportunities to put Emery’s side in control.

Emery admits Aubameyang, who signed from Borussia Dortmund in January, needs a confidence boost to get back on track, ideally starting with a goal or two in Saturday’s Premier League clash against West Ham.

“Aubameyang needs to find the confidence, then to score and score another,” Emery said.

“I know a lot of strikers in my career and it’s about the moment, they need to be in the moment, and he’s the same. Continue reading “Aubameyang battling with confidence crisis – Arsenal manager”

Serena handed tough path to US Open final

Serena Williams, who is aiming for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title at this year’s US Open, was handed a difficult path to the final after being drawn on Thursday in the same quarter as older sister Venus and world No 1 Simona Halep.

Serena, a six-time champion in New York who is seeded 17th, will start her campaign against Polish world number 60 Magda Linette and could face Venus in the third round before a possible fourth-round showdown with Romanian top seed Halep.

In her last bid to match Australian Margaret Court’s record haul of Grand Slam titles, the 36-year-old Williams, who missed last year’s US Open due to her pregnancy, came up one win shy as she fell to German Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon final.

In the men’s draw Rafael Nadal, who last year won his third crown at Flushing Meadows, starts his defence against fellow Spaniard and long-time Davis Cup teammate David Ferrer, while second seed Roger Federer meets Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka. Place bet on today’s tennis games and Win Big, NaijaBet

Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic, who could face Federer in the last eight, starts against Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics.

Defending women’s champion Sloane Stephens will play Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina in the opening round and could face former world No 1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the third, Belgian 15th seed Elise Mertens in the fourth and seventh-seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals. EPL Match Preview: Arsenal vs West Ham

Arsenal have lost their first two league matches but Unai Emery was handed a difficult start, with matches against the last two Premier League cham- pions Manchester City and Chelsea. The Gunners will be desperate to get off the mark in this London derby.

West Ham have also lost their first two matches, following up a 4-0 loss to Liverpool with a 2-1 defeat at home to Bournemouth last weekend.  The latter would have been particularly disappointing for the Hammers as they took the lead in that match.

West Ham have only scored two goals in their last five matches against Arsenal and were beaten 4-1 on their last visit to the Emirates. Their difficult start to the season looks set to continue here.

Patrick Vieira persuaded me to stay at Nice – Balotelli

Nice striker Mario Balotelli says he was persuaded to stay at the club by new coach Patrick Vieira despite having offers from five other teams, including one in China.

Balotelli angered Nice fans by missing training sessions during the summer as he weighed up his options before deciding stay on for a third season at the club. His decision was confirmed on Monday.

“I had the intention to leave and the club knew it,” he told the club’s television channel in an interview, adding that one of the offers came from Nice’s bitter rivals Olympique de Marseille. Live Matches are available on NaijaBet

“I understand the fans but they need to understand my side,” said Balotelli, who has scored 43 goals in 66 appearances for the club.

EPL Match Preview: Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Manchester City

Wolves have made a disappointing start to life back in the Premier League, only managing one point from their opening two matches.

Manchester City are high on confidence after thrashing Huddersfield 6-1 last weekend. They have made a perfect start to the defence of their Premier League title.

Pep Guardiola’s side failed to score in 120 minutes against Wolves in the League Cup last season, requiring penalties against the then-Championship side.

Wolves can take confidence from that performance but they aren’t expected to have the same joy here. City already look irresistible and look set for another three points. Start forecasting your weekend games Now

Mourinho needs positive reaction against Tottenham

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho badly needs a performance and result to encourage his club’s supporters when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Monday.

After a close-season soured by Mourinho’s discontent over the lack of transfer activity, Sunday’s 3-2 loss at Brighton & Hove Albion brought an early chorus of complaints from fans and former players about the state of the side.

United beat Leicester City at Old Trafford in the opening game of the season but Spurs present a very different quality of opponent.

The bare statistics suggest United are favourites, given that in the Premier League era Spurs have managed just eight wins against United, who have enjoyed 33 victories over the North Londoners. Bet Now on NaijaBet

Guardiola insists that City didn’t disrespect Mourinho

Pep Guardiola saw his rampant Manchester City beat Huddersfield 6-1 before denying accusations that his club had disrespected Jose Mourinho in a recent documentary.

The eight-part series, entitled ‘All or Nothing’, was released by streaming service Amazon last week and has angered Manchester United manager Mourinho.

Accusing City of disrespect, Mourinho took a swipe at the Premier League champions, claiming “you cannot buy class”, for the way it features him and United in the programme. Various Betting Options are available on Site

But, after City swept aside Huddersfield at Eastlands, Guardiola addressed the claims and insisted his club had not intended to insult their neighbours.

“That is true, you cannot buy class. I agree with Jose,” Guardiola said.

“I think we lived an amazing season last season, there were cameras. We did it for ourselves.

“I don’t agree with Jose in terms of being disrespectful to them. This was not our intention, just to film what happened last season. Continue reading “Guardiola insists that City didn’t disrespect Mourinho”
