EPL Match Preview: Southampton vs Manchester United

Southampton are winless in their last nine Premier League matches and Mark Hughes is running out of time to save his job.

Manchester United have been pretty poor themselves this season. Jose Mourinho’s side could be as low as ninth by the time this game starts.

United may only have lost one of their last six but they have performed poorly in that time.

United have only won by more than a one-goal margin on two occasions this season and both were in September. It’s getting desperate at the club.

There has only been one goal scored in the last three meetings between the two sides. Do not expect a thriller.

Team News

Southampton- Ryan Bertrand missed last weekend’s Premier League match due to suspension and is now a doubt with a back injury that has prevented him from training this week.

Danny Ings and Shane Long are the only other notable injury concerns for Southampton this weekend, with the former running out of time to prove his fitness.

Mark Hughes made wholesale changes in the midweek defeat to Leicester in the League Cup and will restore his usual XI against United.

Manchester United-  Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba were dropped to the bench against Young Boys on Tuesday night but will more than likely be restored to the starting XI on Saturday. Marcus Rashford and Fred will drop out of the team, respectively.

Luke Shaw missed last weekend’s drab 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace through suspension but is available again and will start here. Ashley Young was rested against Young Boys in midweek and should replace Antonio Valencia at right-back on Saturday.

Victor Lindelof is sidelined for three weeks and Phil Jones should keep his place in the team as a result. Ander Herrera has been left out of Manchester United’s last two matchday squads suggesting the Spaniard is injured again.

Alexis Sanchez suffered a hamstring injury in training on Thursday and looks set for a period on the sidelines. He is certainly ruled out this weekend.
