Super Cup Match Preview: Liverpool vs Chelsea

Liverpool started their season with a 4-1 win over Norwich on Friday, though they looked unusually vulnerable at the back. Now they have also lost first-choice goalkeeper Alisson for up to two months through injury.

Frank Lampard started life as Chelsea manager with a 4-0 defeat away to Manchester United and life doesn’t get any easier for the 41-year-old in midweek. Chelsea have also had two days fewer recovery for this match.

Chelsea have only lost one of their last six encounters with Liverpool but it would be a shock if they lifted the European Super Cup on Wednesday night.

Team News

Liverpool- Alisson has been ruled for a number of weeks with a calf injury sustained in Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Norwich on Friday. Summer signing Adrian will deputise.

Sadio Mane was only deemed fit enough for a place on the bench in Liverpool’s Premier League curtain-raiser but may come into the starting XI in midweek. Various betting options are available on NaijaBet

With Saturday’s league match with Southampton in mind, Jurgen Klopp is expected to rotate in defence and midfield.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Joel Matip and James Milner are among those pushing for starts in midweek. Naby Keita limped out of training on Tuesday with another injury set-back and is unlikely to feature.

Dejan Lovren has been left out of the Liverpool squad amid talk of a move to Serie A side Roma.

Chelsea- Frank Lampard would have rotated after Sunday’s match with Manchester United anyway due to the quick turnaround between matches but he will ponder even more changes after a 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

N’Golo Kante picked up a small injury in Sunday’s defeat to United and needs further assessment. The 2018 World Cup winner has endured a nightmare summer with injury and news of another knock is a blow for Lampard’s side.

Christian Pulisic was only used from the bench at Old Trafford and will be desperate to start against Liverpool here. Lampard praised Mason Mount in the build up to the game, suggesting he will keep his place in the team on Wednesday.

Kurt Zouma was poor against United and Lampard may ponder rushing Antontio Rudiger back after including the German in the travelling squad. Fikayo Tomori is another alternative or César Azpilicueta could move inside from right-back.

Willian has also made the trip after skipping Chelsea’s first league game of the season. He may have to settle for a place on the bench with Pedro and Pulisic ahead of him in the pecking order.
