Liverpool out of sight as focus move to top-four

Liverpool can equal Manchester City’s record of 20 consecutive home Premier League wins on a weekend that pits six top-four contenders against each other in the scramble for Champions League spots.

Jurgen Klopp’s men, champions in all but name after 23 wins in 24 matches, will lock horns with in-form Southampton at Anfield on Saturday with the chance to extend their lead over City to 22 points.

Pep Guardiola’s City travel to face Tottenham while third-placed Leicester host Chelsea and Manchester United take on Wolves in an intriguing set of fixtures.

AFP picks out some of the main talking points ahead of this weekend’s matches.

Manchester United finally got the Bruno Fernandes signing over the line this week and long-suffering fans will be desperately hoping he can be the key to unlocking opposition defences.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s resources have been stretched thin with injuries to Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay but they have struggled all season, particularly in midfield. Start forecasting your weekend games now

“Bruno’s goals and assists stats speak for themselves,” said the Norwegian boss. “He will be a fantastic addition to our team and he will help us push on in the second part of the season.”

Inter’s new boys settling nerves before Milan derby

Antonio Conte’s new Premier League recruits have been settling nerves at title-chasing Inter Milan who travels to Udinese on Sunday looking to end a three-match Serie A winless run before their derby clash against city rivals AC Milan.

Inter have brought in Christian Eriksen, Ashley Young and Victor Moses to keep the pressure on leaders Juventus as the Chinese-owned club target a first Scudetto since 2010.

The pace of the season had taken its toll, however, and Inter are on a run of three consecutive 1-1 league draws against Atalanta, Lecce and Cagliari.

Lautaro Martinez was given a two-match ban for his late sending off against the Sardinians and will miss Sunday’s game in Udine and the derby against AC Milan the following weekend.

Conte’s side are three points behind eight-time reigning champions Juventus, who slipped up last weekend with a 2-1 defeat at Napoli.

But they have recruited Tottenham midfielder Eriksen, 27, Nigerian Moses, 29, on loan from Chelsea and defender Young from Manchester United. Start forecasting your weekend games Now

The trio have already helped Inter reach the Italian Cup semifinal with a win over Fiorentina at the San Siro midweek.

La Liga leaders Real set to inflict more crisis to Atletico

La Liga leaders Real Madrid host neighbours Atletico on Saturday, with the visitors on their worst run of results since Diego Simeone took charge in 2011.

The Argentinean coach has revolutionised Atletico’s fortunes over the past nine years. But their form has nosedived this season, culminating in an embarrassing Copa del Rey elimination at the hands of third-tier side Cultural Leonesa last week.

Winless in their last four in all competitions, having drawn nine of their 21 La Liga games this season, they dropped out of the top four at the weekend.

Simeone acknowledges they need to make changes if they are to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

“We need to work hard, looking for answers (to what is going on), and make decisions, especially me, in terms of improving the side,” he said.

“We need to get back our calm, I’ve got a good squad, we’ll get players back into the fold and have more competition for places and we’ll go into Saturday’s game determined to win it.” Place bet on NaijaBet

Atletico will be without injured club record signing Joao Felix for the trip to the Bernabeu as well as long-term absentee Diego Costa. But club captain Koke looks set to return following a hamstring issue.

Victory over West Ham make Liverpool go 19 points clear

Jurgen Klopp insisted Liverpool are not motivated by making history after the runaway leaders took another step towards the Premier League title with a 2-0 win at West Ham on Wednesday.

Klopp’s side have turned the title race into a procession and they moved 19 points clear at the top with their 23rd victory from 24 league games this season.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring with a first half penalty at the London Stadium and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain wrapped up Liverpool’s 15th successive league win after the interval.

Second-placed Manchester City are now so far behind Liverpool that the question is not if but when the Reds clinch their first English league title since 1990.

The Reds have won 31 of their past 32 league fixtures, only dropping points in a 1-1 draw at Manchester United in October. Don’t miss today’s games on NaijaBet

With 14 games left, Liverpool’s incredible run has given historic overtones to their impending title coronation.

But Klopp is only concerned about getting Liverpool over the finish line, with any landmarks set on the way merely the icing on the cake.

Paul Pogba is desperate to play says Solskjaer

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is “desperate” to play after having his ankle cast removed following surgery earlier this month but there is still no timeline for the Frenchman’s return, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said.

The 26-year-old has made only eight appearances in all competitions this season having been sidelined for three months earlier in the campaign before deciding to undergo surgery.

“Paul’s had a terrible season with injuries, he’s desperate to play football,” Solskjaer told reporters ahead of Wednesday’s League Cup semifinal against Manchester City, where they will look to overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit.

“It’s hard to put timescales on long-term injuries … he loves playing and he loves just being out there training as well, and it’s been playing on his mind.

“I see a boy that is fed up of being injured … Paul has always been a top professional. I don’t have any doubts when he comes back he’s going to enjoy himself,” Solskjaer added.

Loew needs to recall Mueller for Euro 2020 – Bayern bosses

Bayern Munich bosses are urging Germany head coach Joachim Loew to recall Thomas Mueller to the national team and take the in-form forward to the Euro 2020 finals.

Loew dropped a bombshell in March 2019 by axing Mueller, plus fellow 2014 World Cup winners Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels.

Loew ditched the trio to rebuild the Germany team after the debacle at the 2018 World Cup, when the defending champions finished last in their group and failed to reach the knock-out stages in Russia.

“The game is not over yet,” was Mueller’s response after his dismissal last March.

He blasted Loew at the time, saying the way he was informed of the decision was “not in good style – it had nothing to do with appreciation” after 100 appearances and 38 goals for Germany.

Loew’s squad face world champions France and reigning European champions Portugal in their group for the Euro 2020 finals. Place bet on virtual games 24/7 on NaijaBet

There are calls to reinstate Mueller for March’s friendlies against Spain and Italy and the 30-year-old’s current form makes Loew’s decision hard to justify.

He has set up 12 goals in the Bundesliga this season, the most assists in Germany’s top tier, scoring four goals in Bayern’s last seven league games.

Leicester have to seize this wonderful opportunity to reach Wembley

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers says his side have a “wonderful opportunity” which they must take, ahead of their Carabao Cup semifinal second leg against Aston Villa on Tuesday.

With the tie finely poised following a 1-1 draw in the first leg earlier this month, the Foxes will be hoping to build upon what has been a memorable campaign so far by becoming the first side to book their place in March’s Final at Wembley Stadium.

Rodgers is unbeaten in 30 matches in cup competitions and, speaking ahead of the game, says he’s looking forward to what promises to be a “great occasion”.

“We played well in the first game but didn’t get the result we wanted,” he told reporters. “It’s a semi-final and a wonderful opportunity for us. It’ll be a great occasion.

Aus Open: Federer saves seven match points in great escape

Roger Federer pulled off one of the greatest escapes of his career Tuesday, saving seven match points to come from two sets down and beat Tennys Sandgren for a place in the Australian Open semifinals.

In a drama-packed match, the normally ice-cool Swiss was slapped with a code warning for swearing and needed a rare medical timeout for a groin injury before winning 6-3, 2-6, 2-6, 7-6 (10/8), 6-3.

The six-time champion’s reward is a showdown against either long-time rival Novak Djokovic or big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic.

“I don’t deserve this one, but I’m standing here and obviously very happy,” said Federer, 38, who became the oldest man in 43 years to make the last four at Melbourne Park after Ken Rosewall.

“I just said (to myself while losing), I believe in miracles,” he added.

“I got incredibly tonight, today – I don’t even know what time it is. I’m lucky to be here and might as well make the most of it (in the semis).”

The victory was his 102nd at Melbourne Park, surpassing his tally at Wimbledon to make the Australian Open his most successful Slam in terms of matches won. Place bet on Tennis Games on NaijaBet

In two decades of playing the Australian Open, he had never lost to a player ranked as low as Sandgren’s 100 since 54th-ranked Arnaud Clement beat him way back in 2000.

Christian Eriksen lands in Italy for medical ahead of Inter Milan move

Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen is closing in on his move to Inter Milan, as he landed in Italy on Monday morning ahead of a medical with the Serie A side.

The 27-year-old is is expected to complete a £16.8m move to Italy which could see him earn up to £320,000 per week.

Inter Milan CEO Giuseppe Marotta said: “You all know that we are negotiating with Tottenham. I am optimistic and I hope everything can be concluded quickly because the market closes on Friday and we hope to conclude the negotiations in the next few days.”

Eriksen has made 305 appearances during his six-and-a-half year spell in north London, scoring 69 goals and providing 89 assists.

Barcelona did make an enquiry for Eriksen on Thursday, but failed to follow up with an offer.

Neymar honors late Kobe Bryant with PSG goal

Neymar dedicated his second goal in Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-0 win at Lille on Sunday to basketball legend Kobe Bryant, whose death on Sunday in a helicopter crash shocked the world.

The Brazilian slotted home the 52nd-minute penalty that put PSG two goals up in the French Ligue 1 clash and went over to the television cameras by the side of the Stade Pierre Mauro pitch to make the number 24 with his fingers in honour of Bryant’s shirt number.

“It’s deeply saddening for the world of sport and for all of us,” said Neymar to Canal+ after the win, which put PSG 10 points clear at the top of the league.

“Not just for basketball fans, but for everything he did for sport.”

Bryant, who had been nominated for the NBA Hall of Fame in December, was confirmed dead at 41 years old on Sunday after a helicopter crashed and burst into flames in foggy conditions in suburban Los Angeles, leaving five people dead. Place bet on Live Events 24/7 on NaijaBet

Man United needs quick improvement after Burnley defeat – James

Daniel James admitted Manchester United’s performance against Burnley “simply wasn’t good enough” after an embarrassing defeat that darkened the mood at the troubled club.

Burnley triumphed at Old Trafford on Wednesday for the first time since 1962, with Chris Wood and Jay Rodriguez scoring in a 2-0 win.

United have now lost more Premier League games than they have won since Solskjaer’s permanent appointment in March and are 30 points behind leaders Liverpool, who also have two games in hand on their rivals.

The Norwegian boss reportedly retains the backing of the United hierarchy despite the club’s dismal run, but Wales winger James knows they must improve quickly.

PSG hope to tie down star Edinson Cavani

He has scored more goals than anyone else in the relatively short history of Paris Saint-Germain and is revered by supporters, but Edinson Cavani now looks set to leave the club before the January transfer window closes.

The Uruguayan is out of contract at the season’s end and is reportedly determined to join Atletico Madrid having been relegated to the role of rarely used substitute in Thomas Tuchel’s team. Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has also admitted an interest in the player.

Cavani did not play in Wednesday’s 3-0 League Cup semifinal win at Reims because he was, according to Tuchel, “a little bit injured”.

It remains to be seen if he will play any part in this weekend’s trip to Lille, as the clock ticks down to the transfer window closing on January 31.

With 198 goals since arriving from Napoli in 2013, Cavani long ago overtook old teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s mark of 156 to become the club’s all-time top scorer. Start forecasting your weekend games now on NaijaBet

Schalke hunt for first win over Bayern in a decade.

Schalke 04 are looking for their first win over champions Bayern Munich since 2010 when they travel to the Bavarian capital on Saturday, boosted by last week’s victory over third-placed Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Coach David Wagner has quietly turned the Royal Blues into contenders for a European spot, with a solid defence – the second best in the league – the backbone of his game.

Their quick switch-play and counter-attacks have proved equally effective, with seven goals already coming on the break, compared to three for all of last season.

Schalke, who have lost just once in their last 10 league games, are in fifth place on 33 points, three behind Bayern, who are second.

“We have no pressure at all because when you play at Bayern you have nothing to lose,” said midfielder Suat Serdar, Schalke’s leading scorer with seven league goals. Place bet on Live Matches 24/7 on NaijaBet

Mourinho admit dropping Gazzaniga for Lloris hurt

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho admitted it hurt to leave out keeper Paulo Gazzaniga for returning Hugo Lloris for Wednesday’s Premier League win against Norwich City.

France World Cup winner Lloris has been out since dislocating his elbow during a defeat by Brighton and Hove Albion in early October with stand-in Gazzaniga proving a capable deputy in the intervening period.

Argentine Gazzaniga even saved a penalty during Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Watford, yet found himself back on the bench three days later as Lloris was given the nod.

The Frenchman, playing for the first time under Mourinho, was reasonably assured although he could have done better with Teemu Pukki’s penalty in the 70th minute, diving the right way but failing to keep the ball out of the net. Place bet on today’s games on NaijaBet

“Mixed emotions for me. Great to see one of the world’s best back but it was a decision which hurt to leave Paulo out,” Mourinho told reporters after the 2-1 victory that lifted his side up to sixth in the table.

Newcastle stunned Everton with two late goals

Italian striker Moise Kean finally scored his first goal in an Everton shirt but his joy was overshadowed as Newcastle United substitute Florian Lejeune struck twice in stoppage time to grab an unlikely 2-2 draw on Tuesday.

Kean’s well-taken opener after 30 minutes opened his Everton account on his 22nd appearance and when Dominic Calvert-Lewin doubled the lead with his 10th league goal of the season, the hosts were heading into the top eight of the Premier League.

Injury-ravaged Newcastle had barely had a sniff of a chance and when Lejeune’s acrobatic finish beat Jordan Pickford in the 94th minute it looked like nothing more than a consolation.

A minute later, and with panic breaking out in the Everton ranks, Frenchman Lejeune was on hand again to fire home past Pickford after a goalmouth scramble.

It was the second game running that Newcastle had struck at the death, having toppled Chelsea in stoppage time on Saturday. Various Games are available on site for today’s games on NaijaBet

FA charged United over players’ misconduct

Manchester United have been charged by the Football Association (FA) over misconduct of their players in the 2-0 defeat by runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool.

United’s players surrounded referee Craig Pawson midway through the first-half on Sunday after Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk challenged goalkeeper David de Gea.

Roberto Firmino subsequently scored, but his goal was ruled out following a VAR review of Van Dijk’s clash with the Spanish goalkeeper.

De Gea dropped the ball which the defence failed to clear allowing Firmino to take advantage and score.

Premier League Match Preview: Chelsea vs Arsenal

A 1-0 loss at Newcastle saw Chelsea’s four-match unbeaten run in all competitions come to an end and Frank Lampard will be looking to re-focus his players ahead of Tuesday’s London derby. However, the Blues have been hugely inconsistent at Stamford Bridge of late, winning two and losing three of their last five.

For the second week running, Arsenal were forced to settle for a point after going ahead and a 1-1 home draw with Sheffield United means they have won only one of their last seven in the league. Their sole defeat in their last six came against Chelsea, however, yet their away form leaves little to the imagination with just two league wins on the road all season.

Chelsea won the reverse fixture 2-1 and we could see a repeat at Stamford Bridge in midweek.

Liverpool are interested in playing not title talk – Robertson

Andy Robertson says Liverpool will not think about winning the Premier League title until it is mathematically certain, saying the players remain determined to stick to their game-by-game mentality.

A 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday extended their lead over second-placed Manchester City at the top of the table to 16 points with a match in hand.

They require just 10 more victories, having already registered 21 in 22 fixtures, to guarantee a first championship in 30 years and they look uncatchable.

Fans at Anfield on Sunday sang “We’re going to win the league” but Robertson said the players were not complacent.

Ronaldo score twice to pull Juventus clear as Inter draw in Lecce

Cristiano Ronaldo struck twice as Juventus beat Parma 2-1 to pull four points clear of Inter Milan at the top of the Serie A table on Sunday.

Inter’s title push hit another stumbling block after a 1-1 draw at lowly Lecce while Ante Rebic fired city rivals AC Milan to a last gasp 3-2 win over Udinese.

Ronaldo broke through just before the break, to score in a seventh consecutive league game, and almost set up a second just after for Aaron Ramsey, but the Welsh international rattled the post.

Andreas Cornelius scored with a towering header to get seventh-placed Parma back level ten minutes after the break.

But the visitors hardly had time to celebrate when Ronaldo broke through again after latching onto a Paulo Dybala cross for his 11th goal in seven games to bring his league tally this season to 16. Start forecasting your mid-week games now on NaijaBet

Barca’s new Coach arrival sets clash of identities against Real

Barcelona’s appointment of Quique Setien, a fervent disciple of Johan Cruyff, came the day after Zinedine Zidane won his ninth final out of nine as coach of Real Madrid.

With both teams level on points at the top of La Liga, Spain’s closest title race in years will be as much a contest of identity and beliefs as points won and lost.

Real Madrid, the club that defines itself by winning, against Barcelona, where winning is seen as the result of something more profound, a style heralded by Cruyff that has become their footballing philosophy.

Atletico Madrid and Sevilla, both five points behind, are still in touch but playing catch-up.

Setien once said he would have given his little finger to play under Cruyff. Now, 34 years later, he has the chance to resuscitate those ideals after two years under Ernesto Valverde when pragmatism took a greater hold.

30 Top clubs in Europe earn as much as other 682 – UEFA

Thirty of Europe’s top-flight clubs earned almost as much revenue as the other 682 combined in 2018 as the riches generated by the sport continued to be concentrated in the hands of a few, according to a Uefa report published on Thursday.

European soccer’s ruling body said in its annual Club Footballing Landscape report that the 712 top-flight clubs in Europe’s 55 leagues earned a record 21 billion euros of combined income in the 2018 financial year, a 20 percent increase on the year before.

However, Uefa said the proportion of this generated by Europe’s five biggest leagues – England, Germany, Spain, France and Italy – reached a record high of 75 percent with 49 percent going to only 30 clubs.

Meanwhile, revenue growth was three times higher among the biggest 30 clubs than the rest, indicating that the gap is continuing to grow.

“The report highlights a number of threats to continued European football stability and success,” said Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin in his introduction. Place bet on Live Events 24/7 on NaijaBet

Hakan Sukur, Former Turkey star ended up in the US as a taxi driver

Hakan Sukur is Turkey’s greatest ever goalscorer and once one of Europe’s most prolific strikers. A legend.

So, how did he end up driving taxis and selling books for a living in the US, in exile from his home country?

According to an interview with German newspaper, Welt am Sonntag, the 48-year-old former striker’s life has taken an unusual and troubling turn since retiring from football in 2008.

He claims that a rift with the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has exposed him to death threats, false accusations and lack of access to funds.
