Juventus struggling to adapt Sarri style

Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri is struggling to impose his style of play on the Turin side and his frustration came out into the open again after a poor performance in their Champions League defeat to Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday.

In comments that could be viewed as refreshingly honest or a risky public criticism of his players, the chain-smoking 61-year-old said that his team were struggling to grasp the concept of passing the ball around quickly – a style dubbed “Sarri-ball” by his admirers.

“I am having a lot of difficulty in getting across the idea of moving the ball quickly to this team,” said an exasperated Sarri.

“In training, the ball moves around at 200 kilometres an hour but the strange thing is that doesn’t happen in matches. In training, we work twice as fast as we did tonight,” he added after the 1-0 defeat in the round of 16 first leg.

Juventus, Italy’s most successful team domestically, have traditionally been a side who have won trophies without worrying about how they do it. Place bet on Live Events 24/7 on NaijaBet

Before Sarri – who earned his reputation during a three-year stint at Napoli – was appointed in the summer, they had spent five seasons under the more pragmatic Massimiliano Allegri, who repeatedly stressed the importance of “administering the match”.

Premier League Match Preview: Everton vs Manchester United

Everton’s five-game unbeaten streak came to an end last weekend following a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Arsenal. Now they face Manchester United before playing Chelsea and Liverpool.

Manchester United are unbeaten in seven in all competitions. They have scored 18 goals in that time and conceded only one. They start the weekend three points off fourth place.

Trips to Goodison Park tend to be difficult for United. They lost 4-0 the last time the two sides met on Merseyside and it will be a good test to see where United are currently at.

A victory for United would signal they are ready to finally take fourth place from Chelsea whereas a set-back would not a surprise.

Haaland’s Bundesliga record-breaking career in numbers

How many Bundesliga games does it take to rewrite the top-flight record books? The answer is six, if you have the brute talent of Borussia Dortmund’s sensational striker Erling Haaland.

bundesilga.com breaks down the record-breaking start Dortmund’s teenage forward has made to his top-flight career in Germany.

23: In the time shorter than it takes most of us to eat our lunch, Haaland scored his first three Bundesliga goals. His 23-minute hat-trick on his debut against Augsburg saw him shoot down Joel Pohjanpalo’s relatively pedestrian half-hour to collect his opening three goals for Bayer Leverkusen with time to spare for dessert.

44: A goal every other game is a good ratio for a forward. Robert Lewandowski, the league’s leading scorer, has put the ball in the back of the net every 85 minutes this season. That’s out of this world. So, try to stay calm when you learn that Haaland ruffles the onion bag every 44 minutes. Bet Now on NaijaBet

1: Haaland was the seventh Bundesliga debutant to hit a hat-trick, but he was the first to do so after coming on as a substitute, emerging from the bench after 56 minutes at the WWK Arena.

Europa League Match Preview: Manchester United vs Club Brugge

It’s advantage Manchester United after their 1-1 draw in Belgium last week. United are unbeaten in their last six matches and warmed up for Thursday’s return leg with a 3-0 victory over Watford.

Club Brugge are unbeaten in their last 14 matches in all competitions. They drew away to Real Madrid and only lost 1-0 at Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League group stage campaign.

Keeping 11 men on the field away from home in the group proved a big problem for Club Brugge, as they had three men sent off over three games.

Team News

Manchester United– Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Lee Grant are the only first-team members out at the moment. Everyone else took part in training on Wednesday, suggesting Axel Tuanzebe is close to a return.

Scott McTominay returned from injury after a 13-game absence in Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Watford on Sunday. He will hope to start against Club Brugge on Thursday. Various betting options are available on NaijaBet

Brandom Williams, Sergio Romero and Eric Bailly should come into the side from Sunday’s win over Watford.

Guardiola warns City to fight to the end after Madrid win

Pep Guardiola warned his Manchester City players that Real Madrid are more than capable of a Champions League fightback after a historic 2-1 last 16, first-leg win for the English champions at the Santiago Bernabeu.

City struck twice in the final 12 minutes through Gabriel Jesus and a Kevin De Bruyne penalty to beat the 13-time European champions for the first time in their history.

Madrid will also be without captain Sergio Ramos for the second leg after he was sent off late on for bringing down Jesus, but Guardiola is wary of Madrid’s history of comebacks in the Champions League.

“It’s just the first part, it’s not three points. If one team can overcome this situation, for experience, for everything, it is this club, but of course it is a good result,” Guardiola said.

“I am so proud of course but it is just the first step, we have another game, it is not over. So be calm, enjoy it, enjoy the moment. Have a good dinner, good regeneration, on Sunday we have a final, keep going in the Premier League and prepare the second game against Madrid.” Place bet on Live Events 24/7 on NaijaBet

Guardiola again sprung a surprise on a big Champions League night with his team selection as Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Fernandinho were left on the bench.

Jesus was deployed in an unfamiliar role wide on the left, but Sterling’s introduction as a second-half substitute pushed the Brazilian upfront and swung the game in City’s favour.

Griezmann rescues Barcelona to draw at Napoli

Antoine Griezmann rescued a 1-1 draw for Barcelona at Napoli in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday.

Frenchman Griezmann struck just before the hour mark in Naples after Dries Mertens had put the hosts ahead in the 30th minute with his 121st Napoli goal, drawing level with Marek Hamsik as the club’s all-time top scorer.

Barcelona ended the game with 10 men after Arturo Vidal was sent off with two minutes to go after picking up two yellow cards, following an angry clash with Napoli defender Mario Rui.

“In the end it’s a draw that is a good result considering that we have another home game,” said Barcelona coach Quique Setien, with his side in a strong position ahead of the second leg at the Camp Nou on March 18.

The clash was the first between the two teams and also a Champions League debut for both Setien and Napoli counterpart Gennaro Gattuso, who took over after the group stage. Place bet on Live Matches 24/7 on NaijaBet

Van Dijk praises Liverpool’s mental strength in unbeaten runs

Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool’s ability to stay calm under pressure is the key to their astonishing Premier League title charge after they came from behind to beat West Ham 3-2.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are 22 points ahead of second-placed Manchester City and need just four more wins to guarantee winning their first top-flight title for 30 years.

Despite the huge points gap, Liverpool have had to overcome some threats to their season-long unbeaten record in recent weeks.

They were 2-1 down to the Hammers on Monday with 22 minutes to go while they beat Norwich with a solitary 78th-minute goal earlier this month.

Defender Van Dijk praised the mental strength of his teammates, who have won 26 and drawn just one of their 27 Premier League matches.

“Not being nervous, that is the main thing,” he said. “Keep going and keep playing and keep pressing. There will be moments when the opponent is going to have problems if we keep doing the same thing. Bet Now on NaijaBet

“They (West Ham) were a little bit better in the second half than the beginning, they played quite well but I think not being nervous is the main thing.”

Champions League Match Preview: Real Madrid vs Manchester City

Real Madrid are not in great shape heading into Wednesday’s last-16 first leg against Manchester City. Zinedine Zidane’s side have only won one of their last four matches and have now lost Eden Hazard to another injury. They also face Barcelona in the league this weekend.

Manchester City have won two in a row without conceding since their two-match losing streak. This is Pep Guardiola’s first competitive encounter with old rivals Real Madrid as City head coach. Pressure will be on the Spaniard to deliver this season, particularly with the threat of a Champions League ban next season.

Despite Madrid’s poor recent form, do not write them off. They are big game performers in this competition as the last decade has shown. City, meanwhile, have underperformed in Europe. Guardiola will certainly take a score draw back to the Etihad.

Team News

Real Madrid– Having only just returned from a three-month injury lay-off, Eden Hazard could now miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a hairline fracture in his ankle at the weekend.

Federico Valverde is expected back in midfield and could take Luka Modric’s place in midfield. Ferland Mendy could take Marcelo’s place at left-back. Place bet on Virtual & Live games 24/7

Liverpool’s equal another incredible record – Klopp

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp hailed his team’s “incredible” achievement after Monday’s 3-2 win over West Ham United saw them equal the record of 18 straight Premier League victories set by defending champions Manchester City in 2017.

Striker Sadio Mane scored in the 81st minute goal to secure the comeback victory after Liverpool trailed 2-1 at Anfield and they can set a new mark of 19 consecutive wins by beating Watford on Saturday.

“I said at the beginning we want to write our own stories, create our own history. Obviously, the boys took that seriously and that’s all cool but just not too important at the moment,” Klopp said.

“It’s so special. The numbers are incredible, so difficult. We are just in the situation and want to recover and prepare for the next game. Bet Now on NaijaBet

“The next opponent is really waiting and wants to fight us, the whole stadium at Watford will go for us, that’s completely normal. There will be a special atmosphere and we have to be 100% ready.”

Man City need to show fighting spirit against Real – Pep

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued a rallying cry to his players to show character and fight to the very end in their Champions League last-16 tie against Real Madrid.

City, who have not progressed beyond the semis-finals of Europe’s elite club competition, have been banned by Uefa for the next two seasons following an investigation into alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play rules.

They face a daunting task against the 13-time champions, who they take on in the first leg in Madrid on Wednesday.

“We have to show our personality. I know that my players, myself, all the club want to fight until the end for this title,” Guardiola told reporters following Saturday’s 1-0 Premier League win over Leicester City. Bet Now on NaijaBet

“It’s the real test. The kings of this competition against one team who aren’t used to playing these kind of games much, as our best performance was one semifinal.

Champions League Match Preview: Chelsea vs Bayern Munich

Chelsea secured a morale-boosting 2-1 win over London rivals Tottenham on Saturday, but they need to improve if they are to better Bayern here. While they are unbeaten in five in the Champions League, the Blues have won only four of their last 12 league outings, which doesn’t bode well here.

Conversely, Bayern have failed to win just one of their last 11 competitive matches, with the only game they failed to win a 0-0 draw with title rivals RB Leipzig. They’ll hope to earn a similar result to the one they enjoyed on their last visit to London, where they beat Tottenham 7-2.

Bayern should secure a first leg advantage in what promises to be an entertaining encounter in west London.

Team News

Chelsea– Andreas Christiensen played the full 90 minutes of Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Tottenham on Saturday with a face mask and should be fine to start here.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek was fit enough to make the bench on Saturday but Frank Lampard will ease the midfielder back having not featured all season. Place bet on Live games 24/7 on NaijaBet

Tammy Abraham returned as a second half substitute against Chelsea but his stand-in, Olivier Giroud, scored and will hope to continue in the side on Tuesday.

PSG beat Bordeaux in seven-goal thriller as Neymar see Red

Edinson Cavani scored his 200th Paris Saint-Germain goal and Marquinhos netted twice as the Ligue 1 leaders bounced back from their Champions League defeat by Borussia Dortmund to beat Bordeaux 4-3 on Sunday, but their victory was marred by Neymar’s late sending-off.

After losing 2-1 in Germany in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in midweek, PSG’s defensive weaknesses were again exposed as South Korean international Hwang Ui-jo gave Bordeaux the lead at the Parc des Princes.

PSG turned it around thanks to goals by Cavani and Kylian Mbappe either side of a Marquinhos brace, but at the other end there was a bizarre goal credited to the Brazilian defender Pablo and a Ruben Pardo strike had the home side hanging on at the finish.

A richly entertaining encounter then concluded with Neymar being sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow card for grappling with Bordeaux’s Yacine Adli, leaving the world’s most expensive player facing a suspension.

It is another unwanted problem for coach Thomas Tuchel, who are now 13 points clear at the top of Ligue 1 from Marseille after Andre Villas-Boas’s side were beaten 3-1 by Nantes on Saturday. Start forecasting your Champions League & Europa League games now on NaijaBet

Another domestic title has looked inevitable for sometime, although it will surely all feel rather hollow should the Qatar-owned club fail to turn around the Dortmund tie when the sides meet again in the second leg on March 11.

Tuchel has come in for criticism after Tuesday’s game, including from Neymar over the handling of his latest injury.

Neymar still hopeful about Barca’s returns

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi says Neymar remains determined to return to the club and the Argentine wants him to turn them into an all-conquering force again, adding that he does not believe they are good enough at the moment to win the Champions League.

Barca launched an offensive to bring the Brazilian back last year from Paris St Germain yet ultimately failed to agree a price with the Ligue 1 champions. But Messi says the 28-year-old Neymar is looking forward to coming back to the Catalans.

“He is very excited about returning, he has always shown that he regrets what happened. He did a lot to return and that could be the first step he took to try and come back,” the Argentine said in Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo on Thursday.

“Neymar has always been a top level player and different to the rest. He is unpredictable, he takes players on and he scores lots of goals. On a sporting level Neymar is one of the best in the world and I’d love for him to come back.”

UCL Match Preview: Tottenham vs RB Leipzig

Tottenham secured a late win over Aston Villa to boost morale ahead of this testing welcome of RB Leipzig as their Champions League knockout stage campaign kicks off.

Spurs have a solid home record in the competition having won 10 of their last 14 Champions League outings in north London and have won four of their last six European meetings with German opposition, with all four wins coming against Borussia Dortmund.

This is RB Leipzig’s first ever Champions League knockout stage clash and having topped their group, they’ll be aiming to maximise playing the first leg away from home before returning to Germany for the second leg next month.

However, their road form has been poor of late, with Nagelsmann overseeing just one win in their last six away matches. They were unbeaten away from home in the group stages, though, picking up seven of nine available points.

This is a tough clash to call. RB Leipzig’s defensive woes means Spurs will be confident of scoring, but the home side have kept just two clean sheets in their last 15 matches. A high scoring clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is likely. Place bet on Live Matches 24/7 on NaijaBet

Atletico returns to their root to get a win over Liverpool

There have been plenty of doubts aired this season about whether Atletico Madrid were capable of reproducing their past glories, but on Tuesday against an all-conquering Liverpool, Diego Simeone’s side returned to their roots.

Their 1-0 win in the Champions League last-16 first leg was akin to a greatest hits set, containing all the ingredients of what has made Atletico so compelling in the last eight years under Simeone.

The cacophony of flares that greeted the team’s bus was their opening track, Saul Niguez’s fourth minute goal the smash hit, while Simeone, as usual clad in his all-black suit, was the excitable frontman, whipping up the crowd like Mick Jagger.

“I don’t know if Diego saw a lot of the game because he was constantly animating the crowd,” said Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp, partly in bewilderment but mostly in admiration.

Maguire should have seen red, Lampard lament

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has said Harry Maguire should not have been on the pitch when he scored his side’s second goal in a 2-0 Premier League win on Monday after the Manchester United defender escaped a red card for kicking Michy Batshuayi.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system was in the spotlight once again after Maguire kicked Batshuayi in the groin area in the first half at Stamford Bridge.

“Maguire should have been sent off,” Lampard told British media. “That’s clear, and that obviously changes the game.”

United captain Maguire, who escaped sanction for the incident, went on to score a thumping header in the 66th minute to seal the win. Place bet on Live Events 24/7

“Decisions like that are crucial,” added Lampard. “That’s a major part of what VAR was brought in for: a second viewing, different angles. I don’t get why they aren’t looking at the monitor. It should be used.”

UCL Match Preview: Atletico Madrid vs Liverpool

Atletico Madrid were twice pegged back by Valencia in their 2-2 draw at the Mestalla on Friday night, which means they have won just one of their last seven in all competitions. They can at least call on home comforts having won four of their last five at the Wanda Metropolitano, where they have lost just once this season, ahead of the welcome of Liverpool.

That said, the Reds continued their march towards the Premier League title with a 1-0 win at Norwich on Saturday evening and it means they have lost just one of their last 34 competitive matches, and that in itself was a 5-0 Carabao Cup defeat at Aston Villa, where they fielded a hugely inexperienced side. One of their two defeats this season, however, came away from home in the Champions League.

Atletico may have been solid on home turf this season, but Liverpool have what it takes to secure a first leg advantage in Spain.

Team News

Atletico Madrid– Kieran Trippier and Hector Herrera will both miss the first leg welcome of Liverpool, but it’s in attack where Diego Simeone faces his biggest selection headache.

Joao Felix, Diego Costa and Alvaro Morata will all be assessed ahead of Tuesday’s clash, and it could be that Vitolo and Angel Correa start in attack once more. Bet Now on NaijaBet

Barca make emergency striker signing according to La Liga authorization

Spain’s footballing authorities have given Barcelona the green light to make an emergency signing after confirming forward Ousmane Dembele will miss at least the next six months with a hamstring issue.

The France international, who joins fellow striker Luis Suarez on the sidelines, underwent surgery in Finland last week.

Barca, who allowed youngster Carles Perez to leave for AS Roma in January on loan despite Suarez being ruled out for four months, now have a 15-day period in which they can sign a replacement – despite the European transfer window being closed.

Spanish football regulations allow sides to make emergency signings if they can prove they will be left short if player is ruled out for five months or longer. La Liga’s Medical Committee on Monday confirmed this was the case for Barca. Place bet on Live event 24/7 on NaijaBet

The rules also stipulate that any new signing must either be currently registered at a club in Spain or a free agent, however they will not be permitted to play in the Champions League.

UCL Match Preview: Borussia Dortmund vs Paris Saint-Germain

Borussia Dortmund bounced back from a two-game losing streak with a 4-0 win over Frankfurt on Friday night. All eyes will be on Jadon Sancho, who has played a direct hand in 26 goals in 20 league games this season.

Paris Saint-Germain drew 4-4 with Amiens at the weekend, albeit with a heavily rotated side. The French side have crashed out at this stage of the competition in each of the last three seasons, which simply isn’t good enough for a club with their level of investment.

Dortmund’s last eight matches have averaged 5.5 goals per game, while PSG’s last five have averaged 5.8 goals per game. The attacking talent at the disposal of both teams is frightening and all leads to what should be a breathtaking match.

Staying out too long makes it tough for Pogba – Solskjaer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says French midfielder Paul Pogba has been out of action for so long he faces a real challenge to get fully fit and back in the team.

Pogba, whose future at the club has been the subject of much speculation, is still recovering from an ankle injury that has restricted him to eight United appearances this season. He last featured in a 4-1 win over Newcastle United on Boxing Day.

“Paul knows he has to work hard to get back to his best,” Solskjaer told British media. “He has been out now for so long now, it’s a challenge to get back into shape.”

Liverpool look to extend lead as the top-four battle

Liverpool are expected to take another step towards clinching a long-awaited Premier League title at bottom-of-the-table Norwich, while behind the runaway leaders the battle for Champions League places takes centre stage this weekend.

The Reds can extend their mammoth 22-point lead over Manchester City at Carrow Road on Saturday as they aim to not only win the league for the first time in 30 years, but smash the record books in the process.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have dropped just two points all season and are on a run of 16 consecutive league wins.

That march towards the title began on the opening night of the season when Norwich visited Anfield and were 4-0 down inside 42 minutes.

An injury to Alisson Becker was the one big concern of that victory for Klopp as the Brazilian was sidelined for two months. Place bet on Live matches 24/7

After taking some time to get back to his best form, Alisson has saved 26 of the last 27 shots he has faced, with Liverpool racking up an aggregate score of 23-1 in that time.

Spurs sense chance to put squeeze on Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur have the opportunity to crank up the pressure on Chelsea in the battle for fourth place in the Premier League this weekend as they emerge from their mini mid-season break.

Jose Mourinho’s side travel to relegation battlers Aston Villa on Sunday on the back of consecutive league wins, knowing another one will move them one point behind their stuttering London rivals who host Manchester United on Monday.

Another slimline Premier League programme also has Arsenal hosting Newcastle United, with the London club hoping to snap a run of four successive draws that have left them meandering in mid-table.

Liverpool’s procession towards a first title for 30 years looks likely to continue at bottom club Norwich City on Saturday, when the only other game is Southampton’s home clash against Burnley.

A victory for either side at St Mary’s will go a long way to banishing any lingering relegation worries. Place bet on Live Matches 24/7

With Manchester City enjoying a week off, Leicester City can move second if they win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday.

Liverpool will decide on Salah’s Olympics fate – Egypt coach

Mohamed Salah’s potential involvement for his country in the Tokyo Olympic Games will be a decision for the player and his club Liverpool, Egypt’s Olympic coach told Reuters on Wednesday.
