Leicester slump at Swansea is ‘unbelievable’ – Ranieri

Claudio Ranieri acknowledged Leicester City cannot continue hemorrhage defeats after Sunday’s 2-0 loss at Swansea City left the Premier League champions one point above the relegation zone.

Swansea defenders Alfie Mawson and Martin Olsson struck in the first half at the Liberty Stadium to condemn Leicester to a fifth successive defeat and 14th of the campaign in total.

Leicester manager Ranieri has seen his side go six league games without scoring and he knows something must change if their historic title success is not to be succeeded by a historic demotion. NaijaBet.com

“I wanted the start of a ‘new season’ today, but it is the same. It is unbelievable,” said the Italian, whose side sit one place above the bottom three with 13 matches of the season remaining.

“We started well, but their first two shots on goal are goals. It is very difficult to come back from that. It is unbelievable, this season. Continue reading “Leicester slump at Swansea is ‘unbelievable’ – Ranieri”

Conte still wary of Chelsea’s PL pursuers

Antonio Conte believes any of six teams could still win the Premier League despite his Chelsea side moving 10 points clear at the summit after drawing 1-1 at Burnley.

Chelsea negotiated a potentially difficult visit to Turf Moor on Sunday, where Burnley have the third-best home record in the division, behind only Chelsea themselves and Tottenham Hotspur.

But despite the solid result, and commanding lead at the top of the table over second-place Tottenham, Conte refused to discuss his team’s incre- asingly strong chances of winning the championship. Naija and Bet

“That’s normal. There are 13 games before the end,” said the Chelsea manager, whose side’s advantage will be cut to eight points if Manchester City win at Bournemouth on Monday.

“If someone thinks this league is finished, I can tell you now, no.

“There are six teams for me that can win the league and anything can happen. We must continue to work in this way. Continue reading “Conte still wary of Chelsea’s PL pursuers”

Match Preview : Burnley vs Chelsea

Chelsea are arguably set for a tougher task this weekend when they travel to Burnley compared to their match against title rivals Arsenal last time out.

Burnley have turned Turf Moor into a fortress this season, winning each of their last five on home soil. In fact, only Chelsea (33) and Tottenham (32) have picked up more points on home soil this season than the Clarets (28).

Chelsea have won both of their previous two meetings away to Burnley but they would be foolish to underestimate Sean Dyche’s side this weekend. Antonio Conte would allow for standards to slip here, however, and the Premier League leaders should at least maintain their lead at the top of the table, although it will be hard fought.

Conte warns Chelsea not to rest but focus

Chelsea may now be nine points clear at the top of the Premier League but Antonio Conte is experienced enough to know the title race is far from over.

Conte’s side make the trip to Burnley on Sunday in high spirits thanks to their 3-1 victory over title rivals Arsenal last weekend.

The Blues have won 16 of their last 18 league matches and are odds-on favourites to be crowned champions.

But Conte is not getting carried away because the Chelsea manager is well aware any slip could allow one of the chasing pack to close the gap.

“Until the end of the season you have to live with this pressure,” Conte said. NaijaBet.com

“If the opponent win they close the gap. If they don’t win you have the opportunity to take more points. But we have the experience to live with this situation. Continue reading “Conte warns Chelsea not to rest but focus”

Wenger and Klopp in search of lost victories

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp have their backs to the wall as their teams go in search of restorative victories in the Premier League this weekend.

Arsenal have fallen 12 points off the pace after successive losses against Watford and leaders Chelsea, while Liverpool are a point further back following a dismal sequence of five league games without victory.

Klopp’s men entertain second-place Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Saturday, with the German coach setting his team a daunting target of winning every league match for the rest of the season. Naija and Bet

“In my dreams we can win 14 games. I know how it sounds but I cannot change my dreams and that is what I am working for,” Klopp said.

“After these 14 games it is another moment when we watch back and we use all these experiences and all the things we learned about each other, and then we will make decisions that will help us in the next season. Continue reading “Wenger and Klopp in search of lost victories”

David Luiz is a Warrior on the pitch – Conte

The Blues boss has lauded his summer signing over his performances and also insisted that Willian and Cesc Fabregas remain important players.

David Luiz has been playing through the pain barrier and is still suffering with the knee injury he picked up against Manchester City in December.

The 30-year-old centre-back made his return to Chelsea in the summer in a deadline-day £32 million move from Paris Saint-Germain and has proved his critics wrong with a number of impressive performances.

And Conte has explained at a press conference at Cobham Training Centre on Friday that Luiz is still playing through pain but that he is a warrior that is able to cope with it. Naija and Bet

“Yes [everybody is fit to face Burnley], he [Luiz] is available,” he said. “He played and he is fit, he is good. For sure, he is playing with a little pain in his knee, but he is a warrior.

“I think he is playing very well and I am pleased for him, but I hope to continue in this way. For sure, he is showing me great attitude, great will to continue to fight despite sometimes having a bit of pain.” Continue reading “David Luiz is a Warrior on the pitch – Conte”

Match Preview : Liverpool vs Tottenham

Liverpool’s 2-0 loss at Hull means they have failed to win a Premier League game in 2017 and have won just once in all competitions this year. The Reds, though, are unbeaten in their last six against Spurs at home, winning four.

Tottenham fell to a 2-1 loss when these two teams met at Anfield in the EFL Cup earlier in the campaign, but will field a stronger XI here. They are unbeaten in the last four Premier League away games, winning two.

The north London side, though, could be held to a draw, prolonging Liverpool’s winless start to 2017 in the process.

Match Preview : Manchester United vs Watford

Manchester United are now only two points outside the top four after making it 15 league games without defeat at the weekend. With Liverpool and Tottenham set to face off this weekend they have the chance to move even closer to those currently above them in the Premier League.

Watford have won back-to-back games for the first time since January and their new signings have really made an impact for the Hornets. They will be looking to do their first league double over United for the first time in their history after beating them 3-1 in the reverse fixture back in September. United have only lost one game at home all season and have kept four clean sheets in their last four matches at Old Trafford, although they will be tested this weekend. Watford haven’t beaten United at Old Trafford since 1978 and that run should be presevered here.

Bournemouth want Wilshere to stay – Howe

After years of suffering from injury problems at Arsenal, the midfielder’s loan has been a success so far and the Cherries boss hopes it doesn’t end.

Eddie Howe wants Jack Wilshere to stay with Bournemouth but says no talks have taken place over a permanent switch from Arsenal for the England international.

Persistent injury problems ruined Wilshere’s past two years at his boyhood club, where he fell down the pecking order and agreed a season-long loan with Bournemouth in order to play regular first-team football.

The move has proved a success in that regard, with the midfielder making 17 Premier League starts for the Cherries since August, but the 25-year-old revealed this week he is undecided over his future.

Wilshere is out of contract at Arsenal next season, adding to a sense of limbo around the player’s future, and Howe confirmed claims made by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger that Bournemouth are yet to make an approach for a transfer to be accurate. Naija and Bet

Match Preview : Arsenal vs Hull

Arsenal are now in danger of falling out of the top four following their 3-1 defeat to Chelsea last time out. Arsene Wenger’s side are only one point clear of Liverpool and two ahead of Manchester United heading into the final stretch of the season.

Hull’s incredible resurgance under Marco Silva continued at the weekend when they pulled off a fantastic 2-0 win over Liverpool to follow up from the 0-0 draw they managed with Manchester United the game before.

Surely they cannot record three positive results in a row against three of the biggest teams in the league?

United wouldn’t be happy with top-four finish – Carrick

The Red Devils midfielder says only winning silverware will make the Old Trafford squad happy and allow them to attract “the best players” to the club.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick insists a top-four finish in the Premier League would be no reason to celebrate.

Despite a 15-match unbeaten league run, Jose Mourinho’s men are sixth in the table, albeit just two points behind fourth-placed Arsenal.

With Chelsea seemingly running away with the title, as many as six clubs are fighting for the three spots behind Antonio Conte’s team. NaijaBet

Drogba helped me to settle down at Chelsea – Costa

The Spain striker has praised the former Blues star for helping him settle in when he arrived at Stamford Bridge.

Diego Costa has credited club great Didier Drogba for helping to make his Chelsea career a success.

Wenger calls for unity among Arsenal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has urged everyone connected with the Gunners to remain “united” despite seeing the club slip further behind in the Premier League title race.

Successive defeats by Watford and leaders Chelsea have left Arsenal 12 points off the summit and only one point ahead of Liverpool in the race for the fourth and final Champions League qualifying position.

Arsenal last won the Premier League in 2004 and with the title once more looking beyond their grasp, speculation over the future of Wenger, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has intensified.

But this is not the first time the veteran French manager’s Arsenal position has been called into question since he arrived at the north London side in 1996, and Wenger said on Thursday it was vital that the Gunners remember their “special strength” of unity. NaijaBet.com

Slaven Bilic sweats over Carroll fitness

West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic said Andy Carroll may miss Satur- day’s Premier League clash with West Bromwich Albion as the striker has not trained this week due to a minor groin injury.

Carroll, who was injured from mid-August to December, has helped West Ham recover from a tough start since returning to fitness, scoring four goals in his last four games to help them climb to ninth in the table.

Bilic said the injury Carroll picked up in last weekend’s 3-1 win at Southa- mpton was not of serious concern, but suggested that he may rest the striker given his fitness struggles.

“It is not anything major,” Bilic told a news conference on Thursday. “Andy felt something similar to what he had at Middlesbrough and hopefully he will be OK for Saturday.” NaijaBet.com

Liverpool must find the ability to get good results

Liverpool can learn a thing or two from Chelsea such as the Premier League leaders’ ability to grind out results even when they are not playing at their best, midfielder Adam Lallana has said.

Liverpool’s bid for the title has collapsed in recent weeks as a five-game winless run in the league has seen them drop to fifth, 13 points behind Chelsea.

“You can see they (Chelsea) have a lot of experience and that they are used to winning. They know how to win games even when not at their best. You don’t have to always win by scoring five or six,”Lallana said. NaijaBet.com

“Maybe that’s an area we need to improve on. We maybe need to realise how good we are at times.”

In contrast, Chelsea appear to be running away with the league title as they hold a comfortable nine-point cushion over the chasing pack after 24 games. Continue reading “Liverpool must find the ability to get good results”

The lack of egos in Bournemouth’s dressing room will help the south-coast club in their bid to steer clear of relegation from the Premier League, their ex-manager Harry Redknapp has said.

Bournemouth have won one of their last eight league games, a run which has seen them slide from eighth to 14th in the table, just six points above the drop zone after 24 games.
